Emerging potential treatments: new hope for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis patients?
Currently, there are no approved pharmacological treatments for the management of patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) in the USA or Europe. Pirfenidone is an orally bio-available small molecule that exhibits antifibrotic and anti-inflammatory properties in a variety of in vitro and animal models. Pirfenidone has been evaluated in four randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled c...
متن کاملAutoantibody-Targeted Treatments for Acute Exacerbations of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis
BACKGROUND Severe acute exacerbations (AE) of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) are medically untreatable and often fatal within days. Recent evidence suggests autoantibodies may be involved in IPF progression. Autoantibody-mediated lung diseases are typically refractory to glucocorticoids and nonspecific medications, but frequently respond to focused autoantibody reduction treatments. We con...
متن کاملDehydroepiandrosterone has strong antifibrotic effects and is decreased in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is an ageing-related lung disorder characterised by expansion of the myofibroblast population and aberrant lung remodelling. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a steroid pro-hormone, decreases with age but an exaggerated decline has been associated with chronic degenerative diseases. We quantified the plasma levels of DHEA and its sulfated form (DHEA-S) in 137 IP...

متن کاملREPORT OF FOUR CASES OF FAMILIAL IDIOPATHIC PULMONARY FIBROSIS
A 25 year old male and his 46 year old aunt presented with shortness of breath and a dramatic response to steroids. The other two patients are sisters with more advanced disease. One of these responded partially to steroids, while the other died within 4 months of treatment. The genetic basis and pathogenesis are discussed.
